Our Mission

The Oakland Symphony Chorus enriches our community through high quality musical performances and educational workshops that raise appreciation and understanding of choral music, while providing opportunities for people who love to sing.

Who We Are

"The high point of the performance came soon after, in the explosive, bombastic, opening of the Dies irae, to which the Requiem and Kyrie movement is really an introduction. ... the chorus ... was on the money, with crisp, well-projected elocution cutting through the Judgment Day trumpets."  wrote Michael Zwiebach in the San Francisco Classical Voice of our January 25, 2008 performance of Verdi's Requiem.

For 52 years the 120-member Oakland Symphony Chorus has been recognized as one of the East Bay's finest choirs and a premier resource for continuing education in the choral arts.

In addition to presenting our own concerts and workshops, the OSC collaborates with many fine performing arts groups including the Oakland East Bay Symphony, Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, Festival Opera, Oakland Ballet, Oakland Civic Orchestra, Oakland Youth Orchestra, and the Young People's Symphony Orchestra.

OSC has received consistently impressive concert reviews and developed a range of educational opportunities for all segments of the community. They include:

Summer Sing-Ins: Opportunities to sing through major choral works with some of the region's finest conductors, on Tuesday evenings in July and August.

Discovery Day: Sing/study workshop on a major work led by an engaging conductor-scholar.

Sight Singing: Classes for choral devotees on the fundamentals of sight singing.

East Bay Performing Arts

OAKLAND, Calif., December 4, 2009—The Boards of Directors of Oakland East Bay Symphony (OEBS), Oakland Symphony Chorus (OSC) and Oakland Youth Orchestra (OYO) today announced their approval of a plan to form a new alliance called East Bay Performing Arts (EBPA). This new configuration will allow the organizations to increase the impact of their artistic and educational programs and bring music to more people. The 2009-10 season programming for these groups will not change as a result of this merger.
